Forget Sexy, bring substance back!
Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles…….Number One single: 1966
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from ?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong ?
Forty years ago, The Beatles were churning out worldwide pop hits that had masses twisting, shouting, hippy hippy shaking and coming together. While they demolished any sense of emotional restraint within young girls, they also achieved stratospheric status within the music industry for being genuine musicians with a taste for creativity and genius.
Today, pop music is without the musical artistry that The Beatles exemplified. The heartfelt ballads like Yesterday, or inspirational musical feats such as Hey Jude, or A Day in the Life, songs layered with literal and symbolic meanings, are as scarce as oil today - but less valuable.
No, instead we have Shakira telling us her hips don’t lie, JT informing us that Sexy was somehow lost, and he is bringing it back and The Black Eyed Peas harping on about lady lumps…
Subtlety, substance and sustainability are the three, ’S’s that have seemingly abandoned the popular music industry. Three new ‘S’s - sex, saleability and short-term, now dictate what is spurted out over the airwaves. Saturday morning TV is now soft porn interspersed with advertisements. The occassional musical gem gets lost amongst an avalanche of inane dribble, songs that are made to be annoying ringtones dominate the charts.
All of the lonely people - those of us desperate to tune into a popular radio station and hear a song that you can sing to, listen intently to and discuss - where do we all belong?
