Global Warming
Isn’t it strange how politicians and the broad public only seem concerned about things as they happen? For instance, while fuel prices were low, nobody cared about fuel prices. Instead of thinking “It’s a good thing fuel is cheap at the moment, because it’s likely it will increase,” everybody was taking it for granted. As soon as fuel prices (inevitably) increased, everyone shat themselves and panicked like startled antelope. Where’s the foresight people? When things are good, we should know that it could be worse, and strive to keep them good.
Which brings me to global warming. Very smart people in big white coats (scientists) have been telling very sweaty people in ill-fitting suits (politicians) that the global warming phenomenon is going to happen for twenty-odd years. It was all dismissed as doomsday rubbish. No matter what striking evidence that scientists could throw at the politicians, they were having none of it. Now, global warming is high on the agenda, because, surprise surprise, the effects are beginning to be felt.
The way that we have treated global warming is like someone who has been bitten by a snake and only decided to seek medical help once some limbs starting falling off. Not until we feel the effects can we accept its validity. It’s the whole Doubting Thomas thing all over again. Jesus would be very displeased.
It’s difficult to tell which way to stand on this issue. There are of course the left-wing hippies who go on about evil oil corporations bribing governments into ignoring global warming warnings, and then there are the apolitical sceptics who believe that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions and underestimate the power of Mother Nature to shift her climate naturally, like she has done in the past.
Regardless of where you stand, the fact is, the weather is getting hotter, we pollute too much, and a whole bunch of crazy weather crap has been going on. Global warming is a monumental issue. It’s a shame that world leaders possess a foresight that extends tom the end of their term in office and no further. Several years ago, the leaders of the Western World may have listened to the warnings of climate change, and agreed that it was a problem – but upon realising that it was an issue that would only surface years after the end of their respective terms – decided to leave it for the next guy (or girl), or the next guy (or girl) after that.
Where we are now is on the brink of acceptance. We should all by now realise that decadent, greedy, polluty era of the 80’s created a legacy of expansion and cost-effective methods of production. Pollution was an issue because the billows blocked the sun and was smelly – nobody cared about the far-reaching effects. Now we must accept that it is probably too late, knee-jerk solutions won’t solve anything now. We can all drive out little hybrid, fuel-cell, nuclear-powered steam cars, use electricity generated by our own wind-stations, and recycle our waste – but none of that will make the world cooler any time soon.

I never realised you snuck one in on this subject... and its good! I loved your take on it and found it entertaining and informative.
Bravo to anyone who raises awareness on this issue...too right...
I love the picture with the earth seemingly cradled in the crook of the solar flare like that... I wonder who [or what] took that picture..do you know?

Yeah, being a uni student its hard not have an opinion on such issues, especially after one particular sociology subject which every week outlined something depressing about the world.
As for the picture, it's from wikipedia - like all the images i use.
