Hate Me, I'm a Carnivorous Beast

“Eating meat causes environmental destruction, damages human health, contributes to global hunger and inflicts immense suffering on billions of animals across the world.” - Viva!

Wow! there you go, irrefutable evidence that all of mankind’s problems stem from consuming meat…and who knew that eating would actually cause hunger?

Well, apart from saving the earth from the certain doom Viva! predicts, why else shouldn’t one eat meat?

I enquired the International Vegetarian Union website. and found some compelling testimonies:

“If you have the chance to save one life - or to save thousands of lives - wouldn’t you? Cutting animal products out of your life is a fairly simple thing you can do, with far reaching effects. The human animals are supposedly so evolved, with so many great gifts… shouldn’t we use our gift of compassion to save other animals?” said Lise.

“To save yourself from the guilt of knowing that some animal died for you. Isn’t that enough?? But for those skeptics, it’s also a healthy habit.” said Lauren.

“To teach our children the sanctity of life and the true value of every living being, and to promote peace in them.” said Michelle.

Well, I can see the attraction of vegetarianism or veganism to moralistic young world-changers.

Sorry, but personally, I’m not convinced.

Now, I like animals, and don’t wish for them to be mistreated, so put down your red paint buckets for a second let me explain my problem with vegetarians.

Of all of the vegetarians I’ve met, it seems that the decision to take meat of the menu stems not from a genuine concern for the well-being of animals, but rather for the self-gratifying pleasure of telling people they are a vegetarian.

e.g.
Me: “Im hungry, shall we get some lunch?”
Vegetarian: “Me too, seeing as I am a vegetarian, I shall go over to the healthy, vegetarian bar while you go back to your cave and tear into that tasty mammoth you slaughtered.”

or

Me: “Have you tried the chicken schnitzel at the pub? it’s nice.”
Vegetarian: “You heartless monster, as a vegetarian, I am insulted and by your savage practices. I hate you.”

Ok, that was a little bit exaggerated, but many vegetarians do indulge in dropping the fact they are vegetarians, often unnecessarily. It seems being a vegetarian gives you an inherent moral platform to look down upon others with veiled disdain. You can’t be concerned about poverty unless you are a vegetarian, you can’t have a view on climate change, because you ate veal for dinner last night.

Maybe you are like 'Lise', concerned about the cruelty of killing animals, and being a vegetarian is less of a identity thing but more of a political statement and you are boycotting meat. Well, good idea, but useless. Yes if there are enough people following, then you might maybe just make a difference, but considering that the numbers of animals being slaughtered for human consumption in Australia has only increased since the early 1990’s (apart from sheep - because mutton is gross) then perhaps you should try other means…

And if you really cared about teaching our children about the sanctity of life and the value of every living being, then you would starve to death before you ate a carrot that was cruelly ripped out the ground and chopped up, or a potato that was boiled alive.

If you want to be a vegetarian, fine, it’s good to have a cause, but don’t think that you’re changing the world or saving lives, and please don’t tell me all about it.

Excuse me, I have a gazelle carcass to shove my fangs into - survival of the fittest.

I too like to dip into a bit of the animal. I can see the problem at times, yet it seems overblown.

And what of all the bug-eaters on the reality t.v. shows?
