McDonalds are Pathetic
The new McDonalds ad campaign aiming to counter the movie Fast-Food Nation is really quite pathetic.
“I’m sick of our friends telling us that McDonalds food is full of rubbish,” Says several teenagers.
So they endeavour to seek out the truth. Good on them, I say. I too find that people badmouthing McDonald’s food is on the top of my list of things I’m sick of.
Seriously though, who really cares? Everybody knows Maccas food is full of crap - but will still eat there, why can't they just accept it themselves?
While McDonalds are trying to debunk the ‘myths’ surrounding their food, there are more things that are not said, than things that are.
All that these ads do is give people even more opportunities to be cynical towards the company. The McDonalds image-shifting campaign should really have stopped at the introduction of the health food menu.
Now they appear quite desperate and pathetic.
Through appalling acting, selective information and a stupid premise, (what teenagers would seriously ‘road-trip’ in order to find out about what goes inside the food McDonalds uses?) the ads really fall short in actually debunking any of the so-called myths about their food. From the ads, and the website www.makeupyourownmind.com.au, there seems to be an emphasis that their meat is 100% Australian and is the same that can be found in your local supermarket.
Fair enough, but does that make it any better? There isn’t exactly a high opinion of pre-packaged meat bought from supermarkets.
And who cares if it’s 100% Australian? Does that make it any healthier? No.
And the rest of their all-important, myth-debunking facts are statistics on the volume of crap they’ve sold. 12 million kilos of chicken? That’s a fact that kind of makes you wonder if such large amounts of food can really be so pristine?
While the idea of pig fat in the soft serve, choko in the apple pies and the pickle in the burger (to stop it being classified as confectionary) are thoroughly denied by the company, their defence still isn’t the most convincing.
On the website I used the little search tool and typed in “preservatives”… no result. Then I tried “artificial”… nothing. “Cholesterol”…zip. “Obesity”, “new colonialism” and “economic imperialism” also returned no result.
Seriously McDonald’s, if you want people to “make up their own minds,” then you need to reveal ALL of the facts.
